Oil Pulling is an ancient Indian remedy that involves swishing in your mouth with oil in order to promote oral hygiene. Just like a mouthwash you are supposed to spit out the oil after swirling it around your mouth. For best results repeat this procedure for 5-20 minutes so that the oil reaches all the crevices in your mouth. Oil pulling finds its roots in Ayurveda medicine and originated thousands of years ago. People generally use sunflower oil, coconut oil or sesame seed oil for this process. Also known as 'Kavala' or 'Gundusha' this Ayurvedic oral treatment helps in removing all the toxins from your mouth and your body also which enhances your whole wellbeing. Ayurveda is the oldest health science and oil pulling is one of its branches.


HOW YOU SHOULD GO AROUND OIL PULLING?

Oil pulling is an effortless procedure that anyone can follow. Start with a tablespoon of any oil of your choice and swish and rinse it in your mouth with it for around 20 minutes on an empty stomach. Choose an oil, the taste of which you already like. Refrain from swallowing the oil at any cost. Perform this procedure before you brush your teeth with non flouride toothpaste and follow it by rinsing your mouth with warm water . And then follow your normal brushing routine. Eat or drink something only after cleaning your mouth with warm saltwater.

Frequency
You might not be able to start swishing oil for 20 minutes in one day. Start with five minutes and work your way up. Practice oil pulling three to five times per week for best results.

DOES OIL PULLING REALLY WORK?

Researches supporting the premise of oil pulling is limited but if you ask any person who religiously follows this procedure they will never have a bad thing to say about it. With zero side effects and nominal cost, there’s no reason why you should not try it out. Dentists opine that with no side effects, oil pulling is a natural procedure and can be easily followed by people. But if you have visible side effects then you should stop immediately. With limited research available, one cannot be sure of the authenticity of the procedure though.
